Reconfiguring the museum (via hyper text)

I was asked to read an article about online art curation. By someone named  Patrick Lichty entitled Reconfiguring the Museum. To be entirely honest... I feel like most of the article goes over my head.  Reminds me of this collection of poems we recently read in my childrens lit class called I Can Say Interpellation, where the author Stephen Cain who works at York University rewrites a number of popular children's stories but alters them to contain a lot of adult political themes.  He makes a number of references in these poems, and often many of them we needed to look up in order to have any idea what was being addressed.   It the idea of having hyper links to all the references in the works came about. How useful would that be?  So as I talk about this article I will supply reference links...  for the stuff that I don't... well I guess it's just beyond me at this point in time :S

The author starts out talking about childhood gallery visits that he shared with his parents in OHIO and makes reference to the Akron Art Institute and how as time has passed the types of shows being currated are much different than they were back then.  He speaks about the traditional way that many art exhibitions are juried in an oligarchic hegemony  which I think is basically just a fancy way of saying its usually decided by the same old people all the time who choose their friends and friends nieces etc.  Which... sounds about right.

He then goes on to talk about how the internet has changed a lot of things, and how it is a bit easier for artists to present their work to potential galleries curators etc, via email and online portfolios and such, and speaks about how it is easier to connect with like minded individuals from around the globe.  As well as the rise in popularity of net.art   which basically means art that uses the internet as its medium.

He then speaks about the curation of such works in gallery settings and makes references to what i assume must be artists or curators such as Barlow, Rheingold,  and Negroponte.  He talks about something called EATlist which when i search for all i find is various local restaurant databases... and something called SOTv which comes up as a Lutheran Church called Shepard of the Valley. At this point i feel like i have no idea what is being said and that there are just words stringing things i must investigate together. Walker Art Center. AEN  which all i find is stuff about Tool's Album Aenima ... which was really great and now i will have that shit in my head all day.
Bonnie Mitchell, Ed Stastny.
The he talks about the surrealists and how they played a drawing game called exquisite corpse where you folded paper and passed around continuing a drawing from the person previous, in the end revealing the entire image... this is the first thing in the article that I actually understand.  YES!  THe talks about a site called SITO which i guess is Ed Stastny's, and talks about something called gridcosm... which i could not really imagine from the description but when i looked it up its actually pretty neat!

Blah blah blah  RTMark, Anne-Marie Schleiner, Jerry Domokur, a project involving: Natalie Bookchin, Cheang, Verostko, Rees (who i could not find anything about) and 300 other people including a textile artist named W. Logan Fry... who seems pretty cool, he makes textiles out of computer stuffs.

He then talks about Anne-Marie Schleiner some more and a project of hers called Snow Blossom house which i guess involves lots of japanese electronic gaming manga type stuff?  Sounds neat, my boyfriend Joey would probably like this,  and W. Logan Fry for that matter.  However i can't seem to locate this Snow Blossom House, and I have to leave for work in 14 minutes so i guess it will have to wait.

The rest of the article basically talks about change, and how with net.art and the world in general changing, curation of such art will become more and more important, and the author seems to believe that the curation of such work will predominantly be a collaboration between a number of artists and curators. Only the future will tell.

Then it lists a lot of references, many involving links which i really wish i had paid more attention to before i searched for them on my own.

SITE MAP FOR CLASS

We were asked to map a website for class.  This is mine, not the most particularly thrilling thing ever, but it was good practice.  I thought I understand photo shop... until I realized I had no idea how to make shapes, lines or insert text lol.  So a learning experience for sure.

here is a link to the original site.  Please note the grammar issues are not mine, and are those of whoever made the original site.    TELEPORTACIA

deep in the belle wood

This is a series of 13 pieces I did for a class last semester. Pretty happy with how it turned out especially since I did them all in under 3 weeks.  Mixed media, all on wood panels, I used branches, acrylic, wood stain, spray paint, wood burning, paper, sand and probably some other stuff too.

FIRST VIDEO POST!!!! / "artist statement review"

I am taking summer courses again this year, and for an assignment in one of my classes we are to keep a blog going for the duration of the course.  I thought this was the perfect time to dust off the keyboard and pay attention to this neglected blog, it’s been about a year since I last posted anything.  There is a lot to get caught up on.

For my first assignment we were requested to choose an online artwork, or online based artist to review and critique. I have chosen to look at a work called “Artist Statement” by Charlotte Young. Check out the link to her YouTube video.  I decided to make my own video response.

amigurami

so for the past month or so i have not painted much, instead i have been crocheting, i had never really done forms before, just scarves, hats etc, so i decided to try something new and i'm pretty pleased. I had to follow a pattern to make Luma (mario star) but the rest i did free hand intuitively.

my first outdoor art festival experience/ ordeal

so, last weekend i participated in ELORA ART IN THE YARD, an outdoor arts and crafts festival in my home town.  I was originally declined admittance based on my submitted portfolio, which they said was essentially too broad, and to try again next year with a more cohesive series of work.  Ok... whatever.  So i went on with my life, 3 weeks prior to the show i was notified of an opening, and despite being crazy busy with summer school I decided I would do it anyways.  Intensive summer school classes ran simultaneously for the first 2 of those 3 weeks.
I had to find a tent, and booth walls etc.  The tent canopy should not have been as hard to find as it was, many stores sell an ideal white 10x10 tent canopy... however, last minute and late into the summer season everywhere I went was sold out.  I eventually found a brown one at home depot for just under $200.  I found a retailer in mississauga who sold the wire grid walls/ etc.  So i went there and ordered the walls, legs hooks etc.  Because they were too big for my parents car and not fully in stock that day I had to arrange an elaborate plan of my one sister picking them up with her truck, and then meeting me in my other sisters truck in acton to exchange loads... blah blah blah it ended up working out (last minute) all in all was like $900 or so (I had to use my vacation money for all this stuff, in hopes i'd make it back)
Thankfully i thought it would be a good idea to do a test run set up in my parents back yard.  Turns out the order was messed up.  GREAT.  The day of the festival set up I had to drive back to mississauga and exchange pieces, then rush my ass back in time to set up... this OF COURSE resulted in a speeding ticket. But i got there on time.
I figured now was a good time to make business cards, and adfactor in toronto was recommended to me.  I submitted my design on a thursday, agreeing that they would be ready for pick up the following thursday (as set up was the next day).  Well thursday rolls around and they are not ready.  GREAT that means i have to leave the city without them. They weren't sure if they would even be ready the following day.  AFTER many phone calls, they finished them, and I had to get my roomate to go get them, then meet up with my boyfriend to bring them to me.  HASSLE  but in the end they do look really great and I am happy.
Also, stupid me thought that this would be a GREAT time to get a couple prints of my recent "cat pond" piece made since everyone seems to love it so much.  So I go to TORONTO IMAGE WORKS to get the painting digitally captured and 2 full scale giclee prints made, on bamboo paper.  This was NOT CHEAP with the capture and 2 prints it came to like $340  BUT i was like... its ok if I can sell a couple prints for $200 - $300 each it will work out, I will still have the original to keep or sell and can print more in the future.  In theory... YES of course non of these sold.
I didnt have much time to make new pieces, as i was making stuff for school at the time, but I do have a TON of paintings, I did manage to make a number of smaller pieces which I figured i could sell for much less and hopefully make some money back.
NOPE.  I sold 2 pieces, which did cover my entrance fees but did not even remotely touch my overhead fees.  I took my work which i thought was the most appropriate for such a setting, and left the weirder stuff at home, well... I still felt by far the weirdest there... which i expected... and weird is ok in my books, makes ME more memorable.  I got alot of nice comments about my creativity, imagination and technical skills, and my booth looked really great.  I talked to alot of people, and didnt feel awkward or shy at all.  I am pretty pleased about that aspect of the show, but admittedly I am rather bummed about not being able to go on a vacation now.
But hey, atleast I have all this stuff now and wont have to waste money in the future.
